Shares of companies in which foreign institutional holdings exceed that of promoters have performed better than the broader market since 2008. This trend was evident in an ET study of leading companies that showed foreign investors are more comfortable betting on firms that are professionally managed than those run by promoters. An index of top 25 stocks with dominant foreign investor holdings such as HDFC Bank, Infosys, ITC and L&T returned almost 26% since 2008 compared to the 13% drop in the benchmark Sensex.
