Collect more taxes, and get a good appraisal and a posting of your choice! This is the message to tax officials from their bosses at the Central Board of Direct Taxes, an ingenious (and desperate) gambit by them to shore up sagging tax collections and rescue government finances groaning under the weight of a bloated subsidy bill. The CBDT's move to resort to what are usually quintessential private sector tactics is in keeping with the government's renewed vigour to collect as much tax as possible in the 52 days before the fiscal year draws to a close.
